Wen Jie Ong

Wen Jie Ong is a fourth year PhD candidate in organic chemistry at MIT under the supervision of Professor Timothy Swager. His research focuses on the development of new synthetic methodology and the design and synthesis of novel organic materials for heavy metals sensing and removal in water. Before coming to MIT, he spent a year at the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering in Singapore where he worked in the area of organic electronics. Wen obtained his undergraduate degree in Chemistry from University of Oxford in 2012. Besides research, Wen has been active in student leadership. He was the President of Sidney Pacific Graduate Community, the largest graduate residence in the U.S., in 2015-16, and the co-chair for the Committee on Scholarly Interactions in 2014-15, where he hosted lectures by prominent leaders from politics, business and academia. He was also part of the founding cohort of the MIT Graduate School of Leadership Institute, and was selected as one of the 15 youth delegates at the inaugural Harvard China Summit.
